Ebook About A shocking murder carries echoes of the past for a psychologist in a startling novel of suspense by a Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestselling author.Psychologist and criminologist Dr. Gretchen White is a specialist in antisocial personality disorders and violent crimes. She’s helped solve enough prominent cases for detective Patrick Shaughnessy that her own history is often overlooked: Gretchen is an admitted sociopath once suspected of killing her aunt. Shaughnessy still thinks Gretchen got away with murder. It’s not going to happen again. When a high-profile new case lands on Shaughnessy’s desk, it seems open and shut. Remorseless teenager Viola Kent is accused of killing her mother. Amid stories of childhood horrors and Viola’s cruel manipulations, the bad seed has already been found guilty by a rapt public. But Gretchen might be seeing something in Viola no one else does: herself. If Viola is a scapegoat, then who really did it? And what are they hiding? To find the truth, Gretchen must enter a void that is not only dark and cold-blooded, but also frighteningly familiar.Book A Familiar Sight (Dr. Gretchen White Book 1) Review :
This book follows Dr. Gretchen White, a psychologist and criminal investigator, as she becomes involved in a murder case. Viola Kent is charged with murdering her mother Claire Kent, and another recent death has Gretchen interested in finding out the truth. There are 63 total chapters, and the chapters switch back and forth between the perspectives of Gretchen and of Reed Kent, who is Claire's husband and Viola's father. There are also jumps back and forth in time with some of the chapters, as pieces of the story slowly come together.I was quickly impressed with how the author creates a picture of Gretchen's personality. We get a sense of Gretchen's unusual and slightly disturbing persona, not from the author always telling us directly, but from how Gretchen responds to situations and interactions with other people. This creates a more realistic and compelling character, as we aren't simply told “Gretchen is disturbed,” but we are instead given a window into her mind, so we understand the world through her eyes. The way the author tells this story really pulled me in; I felt Reed's distress as he dealt with his dangerous daughter, and was intrigued by Gretchen and her sociopath tendencies as she attempts to unravel a mystery. Gretchen is a unique kind of protagonist, and it makes for an engaging story when the reader isn't sure how to feel about the main characters. The story moves along at a good pace, always keeping you guessing about the character's motivations. There are some good twists, and well thought out revelations that I enjoyed. The ending even creates a new opening for the next book in the series, and I am anxious to read more from this author.Overall, I liked this book much more than the other First Read book that was labeled as a Thriller (The Receptionist). That other one was more of a domestic, soap opera-type drama; while this book is a unique murder mystery/thriller, with a much more interesting set of characters. There is plenty here to keep you reading, and I wasn't ever bored with the story. If you have read my fiction reviews before on previous First Read books or my other reviews, you know I have issues with authors who tell rather than show. I'm happy to say that the author of this book is a master of showing. While, of course, we are told the main character, Gretchen, is a non-violent sociopath (perhaps too often in parts of the book!), the author actually shows us vividly in Gretchen's thoughts and actions how she has a very different mind and perception of the world. I read a lot of contemporary fiction, and Gretchen is one of the most unique protagonists I've ever read.. and that's saying something! As a nurse, I might disagree that she is a true sociopath as she does seem to be able to get under the skin of others she perceives to be like her, like the young girl accused of murdering her mother. To my understanding, true sociopaths would not be able to understand another person to that level. I found the complex relationships between Gretchen and the two police detectives fascinating. One she had a long history with (Shaughnessy), and the other (Marconi) was a new person for Gretchen to work with professionally, and I truly loved the banter between the two of them. I hope the author keeps that up in the next book of the series as it was quite a delight in an otherwise dark, heavy book. While I certainly liked the book, with its clever character writing and the twists and turns of the well-done plot, I did find the dual-perspective timelines a little confusing at times. I think it's hard enough to have dual timelines in a book, but they didn't always unfold chronologically. Doing so makes much more sense to our human brains, and I'll admit I got tangled up a bit here and there regarding the flow of the sequence of events. I love reading a good psychological thriller once in a while, and this one had me flipping through the pages to see what would happen next. I love that the author kept me guessing as I read the book as each little nugget was unearthed in both timelines, and despite it all, the end came as a surprise... which rarely happens to me… but I love it when it does! Highly recommended.I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
